Joomla Tutorial-- What to do after downloading Joomla?

I have downloaded Joomla-- Now What?

Okay,
So you have downloaded Joomla and it is sitting there in your hard drive. What do you do now?

These are the steps you should take:
1. Your downloaded Joomla file must be a zip file. So the first thing that you need to do is to unzip it.

2. I am sure you must be having a domain name and hosting . If yes, then use an FTP program to upload the unzipped files to your host.

You need a place or a location to upload the files. That location would be the public_html folder (It could have a different name depending on which hosting you have.) but the point is that this should be the folder viewable by , ummm, the public.

3. If you have completed step 2 , your joomla files would be in your host account already. So, now all you have to do is change permissions of all the joomla folders to be able to read, write and execute. Or we could say 777.

4. That's it . You have successfully UPLOADED JOOMLA to your host.

The next part is Installing and Configuration of Joomla, which will be my next article.
But, if you really dont want to wait any longer, then go here and you could have your joomla site ready in 2 days. Really, I mean it.

Go to this page here and you will be able to complete your joomla site, sooner than you thought possible.

Building a joomla website - Step by Step Training - Part 1

What I learnt from a recent joomla video training course

Building a Joomla Site

An overview of how to start and what to look for when building a joomla website.
I am assuming that you have joomla installed on your server. So, if you have a problem with installing joomla, I would write about it in a different article.
I am writing it in a very simple way.
Just like a flowchart.

1. Logging in to your administration account -

To do this you need to use your website address (or the full address of the folder in which you have installed Joomla!) followed by '/administrator'. For example, if your website address is www.yourdomainname.com, to access Joomla! you would normally type: www. yourdomainname.com/administrator. This brings you to the Joomla! login page. You know what you need to do after you reach your login page. Just type in your username and password and login.

2. The next thing that we need to do is to create a section. To create a new section .
Click on the section manager icon on the homepage. The section manager helps you to add and edit sections. To edit a certain section either select it from the menu or just click on it. To add a new section, click on the 'New' button. Clicking on the 'New' button will take you to the section editor where you choose a name and title for the section that you are adding and also add any introductory text that you want. You may also associate any image you want with the section in the section editor

3. Next we create a category.
This step is similar to the above step. Here you will click on the Category Manager Icon. When you reach the Category Manager, you can edit or add categories, as you like. You could also move a category to a different section in the category manager.

4. Now after you have created or added the sections and categories, you are now ready to add content. This is done by going to the content Items manager. You can use the content items manager to choose which content or article should be visible on the site and whether it should be on the front page or not.

I don't want to overload you with information and so I will write more in part 2 of "Building a Joomla Website"

If you don't want to wait any longer for part 2 and want to get started now, then Click Here.

Building a Joomla Website --Part 2 --

A simple overview of adding content.

Here I am giving a very very simple overview of what you need to do to add content and how to categorise these .
For anyone who is getting confused with the sections and categories and content items please take a look.
I am writing this because I was also confused about this. But after watching the Joomla training videos and tinkering around a little bit I have got a much better understand.

This step is done after you have added your template.
So, here goes. Suppose your site is about Lawn Tennis.

What you would do is to have different sections related to different players.

For example.
Create a section called Roger Federer
In this section you would create different categories called forehand, backhand, serve, etc..

Then you could go on and write articles about forehand , backhand, serve, etc... These articles can also be called "Content Items".
An example would be that you go to the forehand category and upload articles or content about his forehand.

I have also made a visual representation of this. Hope I have made myself clear. Please come and comment and let me know if you have any more issues.

I will be uploading a visual representation soon.

If you have gone around a few joomla forums and have seen a few discussions you must have heard about how many difficulties people encounter when trying to install joomla . Some people keep having problems for days and each time they post their question there seems to be a new problem. The problem could be that they couldn't present their questions properly or maybe the person who answered the question somehow misunderstood the question. Some people didn't know which folders they should upload their joomla files to and how to proceed from there. A simple process of downloading joomla and installing it on his server took about 2 days and I am still not sure if he was able to do it correctly or not.

What is required is a simple way , a step by step process which could take a complete beginner from not knowing anything to installing joomla within a very short time. When I was getting interested in joomla and started reading about it. I was really lost. I didn't know what to do first or how to do it. Trying to do all those technical things and getting error messages again and again really irritates me. I don't know about you , but when I am building a site. I like to finish with the installation and look of the site as fast as possible and then concentrate more on the sales and promotion process and building content for the site.

Anyone who tells me that for building a joomla website, I just need to keep going to the forums and keep reading the posts seems to be a geek or a very technical person. Just ask any non-technical person new to joomla and he would tell you that reading the forum posts is not the easiest way to build a joomla site. It would really help if a friend could come and help me do the process and help me setup the site.

I really feel the need to have a joomla guide or a joomla course for non techies like me. Its easy for the technical person to read it on the forums and learn but difficult for people like me. I would like to have a step by step method where I am told where to upload files, how to change templates and how to customize the titles.

I am now using a Joomla Video Tutorial which guides me step by step through the setup process and leads me on my way to building a joomla website.
