I'm a newbie, how do I add an article?

First go to the Section Manager and Category Manager. Do you have a section and category that this article can logically be published under? If not, you need to create at least a category to publish under, and the category must belong to a section. After that you can go to Content->Content by Section and create a new item. There are two content panes. The first one is the summary that will show for instance in blog-views, the second is the main content of the article. Save and make sure the article is published. If a blog-view exists for the section or category you have published under, the article will now show up there. If not, you need to somehow make it accessible via a menu item or other form of link.
